The Key to Salvation

Romans 3:23 " For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; " That's a totally believable statement. Everybody knows they've sinned in some way or another - lying, swearing, lusting. But then - Romans 6:23a " For the wages of sin [is] death; " that sounds pretty grim. On the other hand, God is both perfectly just and perfectly merciful: John 3:16 - 17 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." and Romans 6:23 continues "but the gift of God [is] eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Mark 16:16 " He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.", Luke 13:5 "' I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. '" and finally, John 14:6 " Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. '"

We all have baggage and stumbling blocks to accepting the truth. Maybe it was a bad experience with a church. Maybe it's a highly analytical and scientific mind that rejects non-empirical evidence. Maybe it's an egalitarian outlook that can't accept a seemingly narrow philosophy of life. Please, take a moment to explore the links at the left. You might learn something worthwhile. In any case, you'll better understand the "other side" in a discussion.

In this postmodern world, a lot of folks think it's harsh and intolerant to say the only way of salvation is Jesus Christ. I say that God is truly merciful in granting us a reprieve from our sins instead of expecting us to make up for them on our own, which would be impossible. Isaiah 64:6 " But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. " Instead of continous sacrifices of rams and lambs and bulls, we can rely on the blood of the Perfect Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. How can we not accept such a gracious gift?

Jesus died an excruciating death so that you might live. The least you can do is get to know Him.

Personal story

As a young adult, I dabbled in all kinds of philosophies, new age esoterics, astrology, humanism. A lot of common themes seemed so good - unity, universal brotherhood, God in everything and everyone, the ability to learn and be good enough to have paradise. To someone raised in the spirit of rugged individualism and self-sufficiency, in the technological and information age, Biblical precepts seemed so dusty and out-of-touch with reality here and now.

That the Church had historically discouraged scientific exploration, pagan religions, and alternative lifestyles made it feel un-loving. That some Christians I encountered were stridently anti-gay but pro capital punishment made them appear un-loving and hypocritical. That some Christian broadcasters and televangelists faced sex and money scandals made them look greedy and extremely hypocritical.

Then one day it hit me - Nobody's perfect, we all think we're better than we really are, and that's why we all need Jesus. This wasn't my thought - I was still sure I was better than all those nasty judgemental Christians - I believe it was God smacking me upside the head to get me on the right track before it was too late. Praise the Lord!
